This morning I was reading and meditating upon the passage in Luke 15 and would like to share some of the deep truths God impressed upon my heart. The story here is a well known parable of the prodigal son.
Let’s read Luke 15 verse 12 onward:
Jesus also told them another story:
Once a man had two sons. 12 The younger son said to his father, “Give me my share of the property.” So the father divided his property between his two sons. Not long after that, the younger son packed up everything HE (the younger son) owned and left for a foreign country, where he wasted all his money in wild living. 14 He had spent everything, when a bad famine spread through that whole land. Soon he had nothing to eat. Then he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. He longed to eat his fill from the carob pods the pigs were eating, BUT NO ONE WOULD GIVE HIM ANY.”
Those having siblings/ children can relate to the youngest son’s personality traits- rebellious, reckless, lover of fun and entertainment. The second son in the parable fit this description perfectly. He was reckless. He squandered (spent unwisely, spent money like water, wasted, misspent) EVERYTHING HE OWNED…until he had nothing left. To make things worse, the entire land was struck with famine- so even the country he lived in could not take care of him.
There are some of us, who are sons and daughters of the King of Kings who like the second son, have lived foolish lives. We have been enticed by the things of the world namely the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. Yet God has not created us to be this way. As His sons and daughters, we have been designed to live close to Him, so we may glean His will for us and live out our purposes by walking in freedom. But we have chosen the wrong route- we have chosen to go against His will. We have taken a path that took us far from him.
Perhaps we have gone so far away from the Lord that we find ourselves now in a cul-de-sac. A dead end with no options. We have perhaps lost everything- our sanity, our purpose. Maybe even relationships and all our material possession.
I’d like you to focus your attention on verse 14:
He LONGED to eat HIS FILL from the carob pods the pigs were eating, BUT NO ONE WOULD GIVE HIM ANY.
Perhaps like the prodigal son, you find yourselves in a dirty, smelly, noisy, chaotic place so far away from God. You find yourselves craving “carob pods”…You are longing and desperate and dying of hunger and are longing to fill yourself with “pigs’ feed”…You are disappointed because no one cares to give you any.
If you relate yourself to the prodigal son in this story, know that you are in a wrong place and in wrong company, my friend! And no wonder we feel miserable.
Those “carob pods” will not fill you!! Be glad that NO ONE will throw you some carob pods. Because you know what? Carob pods are NOT your portion!! They are meant for the PIGS but NOT for you!!
Now what does the Bible mean, when it refers to pigs? Well, pigs are animals who do not “chew” their food. In the Bible, pigs refer to people who do not appreciate the deep things of God, they do not meditate/ ruminate/chew on His Word day and night. Pigs have “divided” hooves. They represent so-called Christians who live double lives with one leg in the world and the other with God. They refer to people who profess to know Christ but are attracted to the way of the world-the lust of the eyes, the pride of life and the lust of the flesh.
Now the prodigal son was living “the lifestyle of a pig”- he had gone the way of the world. The lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life had over taken and blinded him and led him astray from the purpose God had for him as HIS SON. YET HE WAS NOT meant to be “A PIG”! HE was a SON! Do you understand the difference? He did not belong there!!
YOU, are a CHILD of the living Lord- created to serve HIM with a unified heart and mind and soul, with a single minded purpose, by FIXING your eyes on Jesus, and not letting the things of the world distract you. You have NO portion with the pigs!
Let this truth sink in deep into your hearts today: YOU are HIS SON/ DAUGHTER. You have a privileged place in His Kingdom as HIS CHILD. You are NOT a PIG!! Children DO NOT crave pigs’ food!
Verses 17-19 say, “When he came to his senses (= realized, understood, became aware), he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH food, and HERE (=outside God’s Will) I (= son and daughter of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!) AM dying of hunger (=now how ironical is that?). I’ll get up, go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. 19 I’m no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired hands.’ (=Psalm 84:10 says, “For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.“)
I LOVE that Jesus narrates this story along with the other parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin to encourage those of us who have fallen away from His PLANS AND PURPOSES- to tell us that HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW! He is watching out for you and He is bringing you back to Him!! Hallelujah!
God is saying in essence: snap out of this misery you are living in. This is not My purpose for you. You are not living in the fullness that I have created you for. You are SO outside MY will for you. But be encouraged for it is I who brought you to your senses today through the working of My Holy Spirit. I AM coming to get you.
The fact that you are even reading this article today is by no means a coincidence. It is part of His divine plan for you. Rejoice. For He is about to bring you back to complete the good work He has started in you.
In verse 20-21, we read, “So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father SAW HIM and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. 21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I’m no longer worthy to be called your son.’
There was a great physical distance between him and his father, yet his father SAW HIM FROM AFAR and was FILLED WITH COMPASSION. And HE ran to His son! I love how the father ran to the son!! He did not wait for the son to reach him. That is how our Heavenly Father relates to us, His children!!
The Lord only waits to see that we “come to our senses” and then does the rest of the work of reconciliation and restoration. How amazing is that?!! The father threw his arms around his son and kissed him– as a sign that the son was welcome to be back where he belonged! No questions asked!! The father did not mourn the loss of wasted material possessions. He knew the worth of a soul. It is priceless and irreplaceable. Of far higher value than all the treasures of this world.
Today, if the Holy Spirit stirs your hearts to come back to Him, please do not resist. Your change of heart to live life within His will from this moment on and to return to Him are by no means an accident. God is at work in your heart.
Lord I pray that as Your children who have strayed away from Your will come to their senses, that You will keep them safe from the lies and whispers of the enemy. Lies that they are not good enough, that they are a failure, that they are not worthy to be Your child, that it is too late and they are too far away from Your grace, that it is impossible to come back to You now… I speak Your truth over them today in Jesus’ Name. That they are loved by You with a forever faithful, everlasting, unconditional, relentless LOVE that pursues after every strayed sheep, after ever prodigal son…That You long to reveal to them the amazing, good plans You have for their lives that You planned for each of us, YOUR sons and daughters, even before a day in our lives began. Oh Jesus break the chains of bondage the enemy has bound them up with. Set them free, Jesus!
Verses 22-24 go on to say, “But the father told his slaves, ‘Quick! (=before My son allows the lies of the enemy to take root in his heart, and lest he forgets! Quick, before he wallows in feelings of unworthiness and humiliation! Quick, before anyone judges him in his place of absolute vulnerability! Quick! Hurry up! There is no time to waste here! I am not interested in what he did. My son is back, that is more than enough!) Bring out the best robe (=nothing but the BEST for My Son! I am going to remove those filthy rags. I am going to clothe my child in My righteousness.) and put it on him (=his shame and filth will no longer be there! I am doing a new thing for him. A new beginning springs forth from today!! I will no longer remember the events of the past. The enemy will not taunt him anymore. His shame and guilt are washed away forever by My blood); put a ring on his finger (= a symbol of favor and dignity, usually worn by the rich! God is clothing you, His beloved, with favor and dignity now that you are returning to Him) and sandals on his feet (= being barefoot in public was a sign of intense mourning. His father was about to change that into a time of rejoicing!). 23 Then bring the fattened calf (= reserved and slaughtered only for the most special guest!) and slaughter it, and let’s celebrate with a feast,24 because this son of mine was dead (= outside My purpose for him) and is alive again (= this SON has come back to take refuge under ME, back to being under My wings where he should always belong); he was lost (=had gone astray from My purpose for him) and is found (=We brought him back!)!’ So they began to celebrate (=Loud rejoicing and music in Heaven!!! ).
Oh Heaven rejoices over you today as you make the decision to come back to your Heavenly Father today. GOD is moved with compassion seeing you and He is waiting with arms open wide. He is about to promote you into a whole new season! Hallelujah!
I encourage you to listen to this powerfully anointed song by Jonathan David called “No Longer a Slave”. Sing and declare it over your lives.
