Matthew 7:24 says, “Therefore everyone who HEARS these words of mine and puts them into PRACTICE is like a WISE man who BUILT his HOUSE on THE ROCK.” The rock refers to God’s Word or in simpler terms Jesus!! The wise man built his house on THE rock BEFORE the rain, the wind beat against it!! He did not wait for the storm to come so that he could then take shelter under Jesus. (Meaning: God was not his SOS number to go to only in times of trouble! God was a daily need in his life- the wise man knows that he cannot live a single day without God leading, guiding and directing his life!) The WISE man was already rooted and grounded on the Rock! (He did not just hear what God’s Word says but acted on it. He did not just talk the talk but he walked the talk! His faith was ALIVE since his actions and reactions reflected on God’s Word!) Every room (=every area) in his “house” was BUILT on the ROCK of Jesus! JESUS: Our solid Rock. Our FIRM foundation. The storms in our life are inevitable. No believer in Christ is exempted from it. Storms test our foundation. Where is your foundation? On the Rock of Jesus or on fleeting man-made ideologies, theories and philosophies?

Storms also reveal cracks and crevices on the walls: ever experienced a leaking roof during pouring rain? In one of the houses we lived in Delhi, the roof leaked so bad that my parents would place buckets under it and then empty the buckets when they were full. As a child, I heard the loud dripping and splashing of water into the plastic buckets and found it hard to go to sleep. In another house we lived in, water entered through the windows and flooded the floor. Every weak area in the house was exposed during a storm.

Storms reveal the strength of the foundation: Mathew 7:26-27 says, “But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!” In the text in Mathew we read that God likens a person who hears God’s Word and does not do it (=does not show faith in action) to a fool! Because when the storm hit, the waters threatened to rise and the wind lashed against the house, it fell! And: GREAT was its fall.

Oh don’t wait for the storm to come to then put down your roots into His Word! That will be too late- you need to firm your base NOW before the storms of life hit you. Now, when everything is going well!

Our reactions to times of testing reveal where we have built our foundation. When we are rooted and grounded on Jesus, we have NOTHING to fear. The wind can blow with all its might. The rain can pour down and beat against the house. The streams can flood and rise. But we have PEACE in the storm because we KNOW that HE is the Lord over the wind, the waves, the seas, the storm!! We KNOW that our foundation is unshakable in Jesus! Mathew 7:25 says “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet IT DID NOT FALL, BECAUSE it had its foundation on the rock.” The storms of life CANNOT touch us when we have disciplined ourselves daily to die to self and PUT ON the Lord Jesus Christ. If you have not built your house on Jesus, if your life does not reflect Christ, I encourage you to get alone with Him today and ask Him into every room of your house- give Him full control over your lives. Allow Him into every area of your lives (=every room of your house)- your relationships, your job, your finances, your dreams, your life, your thoughts, your words, your actions, your circles of influence. May every “room” in your life be influenced by Christ and Christ alone. In Psalm 62:2, the psalmist cries out unto God, HE ALONE is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will NEVER be shaken.” Oh Lord make this Psalm our deep hearts’ cry today! We declare today that on You alone, Jesus, THE solid rock, we will seek to stand.
